Week 6

9 oktober 2015 - Cambridge, Verenigd Koninkrijk

Another week has passed again, and it was filled with amazing and less amazing things. Here is the overview:

Monday:
As I said in my previous blog, I was feeling poorly for a couple of days. This is why I decided to stay home today and rest.

Tuesday:
The kindergarten part of the Tuesday wasn't that eventful. I made some dragons again, saw the beautiful harvest bread the children had made yesterday, and was asked by a couple of children were I had been yesterday. However, Beate asked me to join the meeting she would have with the two assistants at the end of the day. We talked about risk assesments, looked around the kindergarten so that every one of us knew where everything should be and discussed observations and difficulties. At the end of the meeting I asked Beate if I could photocopy some of the stories, which I could. She then asked me if I wanted to do the story next week, and I said yes. So next week, and probably the week after, I will tell the story before lunch! It is a lovely story about a young boy who goes on an adventure to find a house with no windows, no doors, and a star hiding inside. Can you guess what it is?

Wednesday:
Today we spent most of the morning outside washing and cutting apples for some apple crumble. Beate promised the class 1 children we would bring them some apple crumble, and so we did. Right before lunch we went to class 1 with all the children and a lovely apple crumble. The class 1 children were really happy and it was fun to first see the surprised faces when we came into the classroom and then the happy, excited faces when the saw the crumble. When we walked back to the kindergarten the little Russian boy couldn't find my hand, so he held on to my sweater instead (I was wearing a very long sweater, almost a dress). It was extremely cute!
After all the children were picked up by the end of the day, I got into a conversation with Frithjof (another volunteer) and he invited me to go to the city centre on Saturday. We also asked Hannah (also a volunteer) to join us, the next day.

Thursday:
Today was a very chaotic and insane day. I still don't know exactly what came into some of the children, but every agreed that they were very lively and present. During eurhythmics the teacher had to send two boys out of the room because they were turning everything up-side-down. As soon as those two were out of the circle, the other children behaved perfectly. During lunch some children started to bang on the table with their fists, their cups, their bowls and their spoons. Normally warning them helps enough, we have a three strikes is out system, but today nothing seemed to help. The last two hours were quite relaxing, since most of the children went home at 1. The sun was shining and the children were all behaving nicely. I even saw one girl from our neighbouring kindergarten give kisses to a boy from our kindergarten. It looked very sweet.

Friday:
Today is a free day for me. I'm studying the story for next week and I am relaxing. My host said she would cook for me tonight, which is very nice of her, and as I said I will be going to the city centre tomorrow. I will keep you updated on what happened!

Love,

Nina
